How does this tie in with the Cold War?
Nixon had used the ascend to presidency. He promised to give law and order like they had, had before. They supported him because he had said he would put an end to war even though he gave no detail to how he would. He wanted to make this victory for the U.S. something that we have never had, so he raised the divisions in the U.S. to new levels. In 1968, he had created several divides in the population. Which, this caused the nation to become violent, they had no interest in Nixon's movement. His campaign had announced his secret on how he would end the war with Vietnam for one and all. In 1969, he had sent Henry Kissinger to begin talks with the North with secret peace plans. While the talks were happening Nixon was trying to strengthen our position in the war. He didn't want to defeat the North, but allow the South to stay independent and free from the North. Which then, Nixon created Vietnamization, which was the fact the U.S. would slowly take out American troops while the hope the South would strengthen. While helping take out troops, saving many, he was bombing Cambodia and Laos thinking that it would end the supplies for the North on the Ho Chi Minh trail. He hoped these bombings would give the South and U.S. an advantage, but all the violence had caused protesters to go violent. The released of the pentagon papers that ruined the U.S. government because they'd been lying for such a long time. In 1972, Nixon used the same campaign again to win the election, which he did. When Nixon was forced to resign it was because he was taking payments for political favors and was cheating on he taxes; Nixon had been replaced by Gerald R. Ford and he had given Nixon pardon to all his mistakes.
